In this blog, we have covered certain types of tile flooring that one can select based on the desires or needs.

Basically, tile flooring comes in various materials such as stone, marble, terrazzo, quartz and clay. Each type of tile flooring has its own characteristics. Among them, those that are widely used are ceramic and natural stone.

Let’s have a brief overview of these types of tiles in detail:

a) Porcelain vs. Non Porcelain:  These types of tiles are basically made from Ceramic. Porcelain and Non Porcelain are two types of ceramic tiles. Non porcelain tiles are usually the traditional ones.

It is usually made from different colors of clay i.e. white, red or brown as well as other minerals. Porcelain tiles are also made from clay and minerals however it contains 50% of white dust or sand.  This is called feldspar.

Both these types of tiles can be unglazed or glazed. Glazed tiles have a matte, semi-gloss or high gloss finish that is applied to the surface at the time of manufacturing the tiles.

Non porcelain tiles are one of the economical types of tile flooring. If we compare both, porcelain ceramic flooring is more expensive.  It is harder to work with.  But, its features are what it makes such expensive.

Porcelain tiles are:

-Durable
-Stain resistant
-Through bodied color

There are other types of tiles that are manufactured using the same process as that of ceramic tiles. This includes brick, cement, glass, encaustic and terra cotta tiles. Different materials and manufacturing processes create different product characteristics.

b) Stone Tiles: These are produced from materials that are stabbed, finished and cut to size. Usually granite, marble, limestone etc are the materials used in preparing stone tiles.  There are several varieties with unique characteristics.

The characteristics depend on where and when the stone was unearthed.

Surface Tile Finishes:

Surface of the stone tile is usually natural, honed or polished. The finishing process starts once the stone is mined and then cut into a rocky slab. The rough slab face is then brightened with spiky pads.  First of all, extremely coarse pads are used and then it is finished with less coarse pads.

The tiles are then cut to a size using stone fabricator.  The surface finish will finally depend on the place where you wish to use the stone tile.

When the tiles are finished, these have a slippery surface. Apart from these, there are also other types that provide different appearances.  Each type of stone tile has its own advantage and disadvantage.

Choose the type of tiles that you wish to have in your living room.
